The Classics – Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion

Time for another classic today…For those of you who don’t know, I have a category dedicated to those products which have achieved cult beauty status. Raved about by bloggers, makeup artists and celebrities, these are those fabulous items which all beauty lovers will have heard of.

And today it’s the … Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion

I swear about 75% of the makeup tutorials I’ve watched use this primer. Unbelievably though, I have never actually bought it! Finally, I decided that I had to get my hands on it just to see what all the fuss was about.

First thoughts:

I love the appearance and packaging of this primer. I’ve always admired Urban Decay’s strong, futuristic branding which really stands out from the crowd. This bottle looks like a little purple and silver rocket with an easy-to-open screw top lid. The primer itself is actually quite different to how I imagined (I don’t know what I was expecting?!). It’s quite a thick, creamy formula and you only need a very small amount for each eye. There was a small downside in that it’s a little more difficult to blend than I was expecting and I find it can gather in the inner corner.

Sometime later…

Well, I will definitely say that this 100% makes my eye makeup last a lot longer. I used to find that after I’d been out for a few hours, possibly in a hot sweaty bar or nightclub, my eyeshadows would start to melt into eachother so that by the end of the night I kind of resembled the Joker. Now, they stay put all night! I honestly can come home and my eye makeup will still look fresh. Obviously, even the best primer can’t keep your makeup looking flawless after several hours on the dance floor, but this comes close to it!

Is it worth the hype?

Definitely! It may be a little on the expensive side (£16 for a full-size bottle) but this will keep your makeup looking fresh and fabulous all night and it will last for ages!

Have you tried the Urban Decay Primer Potion? What did you think? Have you found any dupes which match up to it?

Thanks for reading,

  1. Great review Joanna. I absolutely adore this primer too – first tried a free sample of it with one of my UD Naked palettes and fell in love with it right away, it really does make eyeshadow last wayyyy longer… such a great brand & I agree the packaging really does make an impact!! Karen X

  2. I use urban decays primer potion and it works really well for me. You’re right, a little goes a very long way and once it’s set that’s where it will stay along with your eyeshadows and liner so like you say it’s worth spending a bit of time blending it properly before you apply you’re shadow.xx

      1. It lasts ages! I always think it’s going to run out to rush to grab some more and it lasts and lasts. I’ve got a Bobbi Brown lid primer to try next, I hope it’s as good as the Urban Decay one.xx

      2. I’ll let you know if it’s any good. 😄 I’ve got Mac Pro Longwear paint pot in painterly and Macs cream shadow in Malted, they’re both great but I still like the primer underneath. 😄 I’ll have to check out soft ochre xx

  3. I hated this primer. I had a bad reaction to it years ago and it almost ruined my eyelids. It made them dry, itchy and flaky. Even after I stopped using it the problem persisted. It finally cleared up when my mom gave me some ointment from her dermatologist. Now I use either my Elf concealer or my Lorac shadow primer. I want to try the Milani one as I’ve heard good things about it.

  4. I have the mini and it defo lives up to the hype. My old housemate used to use it and it dried out her eyelids really badly so I think for some it’s a bit of a miss. But for me it keeps everything in place all day long. I have the Mac paint pot in painterly and this is so much better! Xxx

  5. I haven’t tried this yet, but I have a sample that came with Naked 3 that I bought in January. It looks like a similar consistency to my Sonia Kashuk eye primer that I love. It comes in a jar and I apply it with a brush so I don’t use too much. My eyeshadows stay in place until I want to wash them off! And it works over my eye cream, too. I’m interested in the UD primer for the more hygenic packaging. Thanks for the review! 🙂

  6. I haven’t tried the full size, just the itty bitty one I got in the Urban Decay Palette, and it wasn’t bad at all. I know I’ve seen numerous videos on YouTube raving about this primer. Awesome post 🙂
