I have a confession to make… My skin does not look like this.
If you saw me on an average evening, watching Big Bang Theory, hair tied up, without a scrap of makeup on, you could probably mistake me for a pasty snowman with slightly rouge cheeks. Thankfully, my boyfriend is usually the only one lucky enough to see me in this gorgeous state, and despite the fact I haven’t been blessed with the olive, glowing complexion of Adriana Lima, I’ve been trying my best to fake it!
So you don’t need to lie out in the sun for hours to get a great tan. In fact, you shouldn’t be doing this anyway! So avoid those pesky UV rays, and take your pick of these products instead…
Of course, to get a genuine glowing complexion, the most important thing is to overhaul your lifestyle in general. Eat well, drink lots of water, get plenty of sleep, and make sure you’re being active (this last one is what I need to work on!). Next, it’s important to take care of your skin with a good skincare regime. I always imagine it as if I’m beginning a piece of art. You wouldn’t start a painting on a dirty canvas, so make sure it’s cleansed and moisturised to perfection! Check out my Spring Skincare Routine if you need some ideas.
Once you’ve prepped your skin, it’s time to move on to my glowing makeup essentials. I like to start off with a light BB Cream, which will give more of a dewy, natural effect than a foundation. Here, I used the YSL Top Secrets, but my drugstore recommendation would be the L’Oreal Magic Skin Beautifier Anti-Fatigue BB Cream. Next up, it’s time to brighten and perfect! Take a highlighting concealer, such as the Urban Decay Naked Concealer or the Maybelline Dream Lumi Touch, and apply it underneath eyes, on cheekbones and down the nose, as I’ve done in my Highlight and Contour Routine. If you want to add extra glow, use a shimmery liquid highlighter like the Benefit High Beam on cheekbones, the cupid’s bow and the inner corners of your eyes. This will really reflect the light and give your skin some luminosity. Finally, dust it all off with a light setting powder such as the Guerlain Meteorites Perles or the Bourjois Healthy Balance Powder.
Now, it’s time to add a bit of colour. Right now, I am completely obsessed with the Clarins Aquatic Treasures Bronzer. Yes, £30 is a lot of money to spend on a makeup product, but this is completely worth it! Not only is it one of the most beautiful makeup products I’ve ever seen, it just gives the most gorgeous effect on skin. Not too orange, not too sparkly, but that “I’ve just got back from 2 weeks in the Maldives” sort of tan. I dust it over the high planes of my face (where the sun would naturally hit) using a big fluffy blush, and I instantly feel so much better! I then like to finish off my makeup with a sweep of this 17 Instant Glow Bronze Shimmer Brick on my cheekbones for even more shimmer.
Now for the eyes and lips! I’ve kept them very simple so as to let my skin do the talking. On the eyes, I simply applied some of the Bobbi Brown Metallic Long Wear Cream Eyeshadow in Goldstone. I find a cream eyeshadow will give that gorgeous natural wet-look, plus you can’t get more summery than a gold sparkle! To define my eyes a bit more, I used a dark brown shadow on the outer corners and crease. Finally, I finished it off with some MAC Teddy Eye Kohl (a brown liner looks less harsh than black) and some mascara.
For the lips, I wanted a clear, peachy gloss which would just finish everything off nicely without drawing too much attention. The Bobbi Brown High Shimmer Lip Gloss in Bare Sparkle is a stunning champagne colour. I only have a small sample size of this so if anyone has any drugstore recommendations, please let me know!
So there we have it! Proof you don’t need to go abroad to get that gorgeous glowing complexion. Of course, that doesn’t stop me wanting to go abroad though… I’m actually currently in Italy on a 3 week travel trip so if you fancy seeing what I get up to, check out my Instagram.
