Fake Tanning in the Shower?

St. Tropez Gradual Tan In Shower Lotion

As I look outside my window right now, I am greeted with the views of a traditional English summer…. Grey clouds and drizzling rain. Aren’t we lucky, hey?? The prospect of getting a fashionable golden glow this season are pretty much non-existent for me, but you know what? I really don’t give a crap. I’m just not into this culture of desperate tanning in which we seem to have found ourselves. I watch girls on the beach slathering themselves in oil, their skin turning a rather aggressive shade of red while it fries under the hot rays. I just want to run over with an umbrella, a towel, and a bottle of factor 50, screaming “think of your skin cells, girls!!” Yep, I’m that person.

Personally, I think we should all be happy with the skin we’re in, whether it’s pale, dark, olive, blue. It’s not worth it in my eyes to frazzle your complexion, causing untold damage, not to mention putting yourself at risk of skin cancer, for a few weeks of bronzed limbs. Especially when there are so many great tanning products on the market right now… I know, I know, the words fake tan are often associated with unpleasant images of streakiness, dirty elbows and knees, or the dreaded tan-gerine orange shade – see what I did there 😉 But if you put in the effort, choose a good product, and apply it correctly, it honestly can resemble the real thing! Just without the risk of melanoma.

St. Tropez definitely seems to rule the roost right now when it comes to tanning equipment, and their latest offering of the Gradual Tan In Shower Lotion has got everyone talking. A fake tan which you can apply in the shower?? You mean, no annoying tanning mitt which always smells slightly funky after a few uses? No towels covered in rather awkward brown marks?? Nope, this baby is a simple lotion-like formula which you smooth over wet skin in the comfort of your shower, leave on for 3 minutes, before washing off. It then, supposedly, gradually builds up over the next few hours to create a natural, bronzed glow.

This has honestly revolutionised my tanning routine (which before consisted of the occasional use of Dove Summer Glow Nourishing Lotion, with the added bonus of a proper tan for a special occasion courtesy of St. Moritz Instant Self Tanning Mousse). This though, is so much easier and less of a hassle to apply! I can easily pop it on in the shower on the morning of an event, and by the time it hits evening, my skin looks decidedly more golden. The only real downside is the fact that you have to hop around in a freezing shower for 3 minutes, although if you pop a song on while you’re in there, you’ll be surprised at how fast the time goes (I’ve been loving a bit of Amy Winehouse recently since seeing Amy at the cinema).

My final thought though, would be that this is much more of a natural, subtle glow kind of tanner, rather than an all out bronzed look. I like it because it gives me just enough colour to feel confident getting my legs out, without looking fake or orange. If, however, your skin isn’t pale (like mine) you probably won’t see enough of a difference to warrant the price tag. On the other hand, this could be a great product to use as a top up throughout the week after using your regular fake tan.

Overall, I’m totally sold on this little bottle of goodness. A cheeky tip for you guys… InStyle magazine are currently giving away a small sample with this month’s issue, so pick up one of those if you fancy giving it a try before investing in a full-sized bottle.

Have you tried this in-shower tanner? What did you think? And what does your current fake tan regime consist of? Let me know in the comments below!

  1. Excuse me while I go hunt down a copy of this month’s InStyle. Wonder if they’ll have the sample in the U.S. copy? Thanks for the tip! Sounds like a great product!

    1. It’s really great and so much easier to use than regular fake tan! The only thing is that because it’s a gradual tanner, you have to use it a few times to build up the colour. But once you do it looks so nice and natural! Definitely pick up the magazine sample if you can to see if you like it. Thanks for reading 🙂 xxx

  2. I always struggle with fake tan being so pale but the in shower tan has been perfect for me! I found it so easy to use and although it takes a few used to build up the colour I do really like it! I’m still using my sample from InStyle but I think I will definitely be picking up a full sized version 🙂 xxx

  3. OMG i totally freaked out when i saw this!! LOL. I had no idea such a product existed – could it be than self-tanning can one day be so much easier?!! 🙂 Sounds great, I’ll definitely try it out. I’m super pale but love tanned skin – I avoid the sun as I’ll just get red then white again and apply tan on most days. Can’t wait to try it out!!

    1. I know it’s made my whole tanning routine so much easier! I used to never even bother cus it created too much mess. This is really nice to as it’s gradual so it looks much more natural. You have to use it a few times though to build up colour, but that might be perfect for you if you have pale skin! Thanks for reading hun xxx
