Today I was in the mood for another of my ‘Worth The Hype?‘ style posts. I always click straight on to these on other people’s blogs, as I’m such a sucker for running out and buying anything that’s being mentioned all over YouTube, and the results aren’t always what I expect. For every product which totally lives up to all the praise (recent ones have been the Mary Lou Manizer Highlighter from theBalm and the NYX Soft Matte Lip Creams), there’s always a few which fall a little flat.
This time, I wanted to review possibly two of the most hyped up beauty products over the last few years. I’m sure any makeup addict will have heard of NARS’s famous Laguna Bronzing Powder and their Orgasm Blush. They’re both serious cult classics and I must have heard them mentioned at least once by every big blogger I follow. I’d wanted to try them both for a while, so in the end decided to go for the cheaper alternative of buying the Cheek Duo. That way I could sample a small version of each before committing to a full-sized package.
So are they worth the hype?
I’m going to start with the Laguna Bronzer, because for me this was quite a disappointment. Described as a ‘brown with gold shimmer’ which can be used for contouring or as an all-over bronzer, I was excited to see how this would look. Unfortunately for me, I just didn’t warm to this colour at all (excuse the pun).
Maybe this is just my skin tone, but for me I find it to be quite grey toned, but not in a ‘good for contouring’ sort of way, just in a not very pleasant way. It doesn’t leave me looking summery and glowing at all, and I don’t see any hint of the promised golden shimmer. It works ok as a contour powder, but just ok, and for the price point that isn’t good enough. The pigment just isn’t very strong if you look at my swatched below and I find I have to go in with a brush several times to get any colour payoff. I would instead point fair skinned girls in the direction of the Charlotte Tilbury Filmstar Bronze and Glow… On the other hand, it doesn’t have enough of a peachy, golden tone to make a good bronzer in the same way as my personal favourites; the Clarins Aquatic Treasures or Benefit Hoola. Overall, this was a very ‘blah’ product in my eyes.
Now on to the Orgasm Blush. This was the product I was most excited for as it’s just such a cult classic. Hailed as a ‘flatters every woman’ shade, I couldn’t wait to try it.
Thankfully, I’ve been so much happier with this blush. I kind of wish I’d just bought this in full-size rather than as part of a duo. I love the shade which is kind of a peachy pink with subtle flecks of gold shimmer. It looks really stunning dusted down cheekbones and gives me that pretty flushed look I’m always after from a blusher. My only point to make though would be that the Sleek Rose Gold Blush is a near perfect dupe of this (and at a much more affordable price). The only difference in my eyes is that Orgasm appears to be more finely milled, slightly more subtle, and the gold shimmer is less detectable. I do think it’s better than Sleek’s version but it’s something to point out if you would rather not splash the cash!
Overall, this is a duo of two halves. I really do like the NARS Orgasm blush and it’s left me keen to try more shades. Laguna on the other hand, is just not my cup of tea… I’ll definitely use it as the neat 2in1 packaging is handy for travelling, but I certainly won’t be repurchasing… Oh well, you win some you lose some right?
Have any of you tried this NARS Cheek Duo? What did you think? Do you have any other recommendations from the brand?
Thanks for reading! Joanna xxx
