A Luxury Beauty Review | YSL Babydoll Mascara

I’ve always been a bit of a believer that you don’t need to splash the cash for a decent mascara. Foundation? Yes. Lipstick? Sometimes. But of all the mascaras I’ve tried in my life, I’ve never noticed a huge difference between the high-end and the drugstore.

Of course, I am quite lucky in that my lashes are naturally quite long and curled (thankyou genes!), so all I need help with is the fact that they’re annoyingly blonde-tipped, meaning without a coat of mascara I look like a tired mole who’s just made it above ground.

I was recently feeling in the mood for a little excess though. And what could be more excessive than something from the ultimate luxury brand, Yves Saint Laurent?

There’s just something about the gorgeous black and gold packaging that makes my heart flutter, although I’ve actually tried their famous YSL False Lash Effect and wasn’t too big a fan. This time, I decided on their other popular creation; the Baby Doll.

The brush of this mascara is long, with fairly short evenly spread bristles; perfect for me as this is the best kind for separating and lengthening, as well as giving a very even coat of black. Two coats will add more volume, but not in a clumpy 60s effect (if this is your style, I would point you in the direction of the Marc Jacobs Velvet Noir). I like that it gives me very separated, curled mascaras, without that horrible spidery look you sometimes find.

The formula is also very long-lasting. I’ve been wearing it in 30 degrees’ heat in Paris, and it’s held up very well, even after the particularly sweaty metro commutes. Occasionally I get a bit of smudging, but usually only after I’ve really been in the sun and heat all day, and pretty much all my makeup has melted off by this point.

I’m definitely a big fan of this stuff. I still think mascara is one of the last things you need to go high-end for when it comes to makeup, but when I want a little bit of luxury in my life, I’m pretty sure I’ll be going back to this…

I hope you’ve enjoyed this post! Let me know in the comments if you’ve ever tried the YSL Babydoll Mascara and what your other recommended ones are 🙂

  1. I can’t even contemplate mascaras that costs more than $10, I refuse! I’m quite happy with my CoverGirl mascaras!
And to be honest, all of the sample mascaras I’ve received from higher end brands, I’ve not been that impressed with (except with a Clarins one, called “Be Long” but I try to put it out of my mind… 😛 )

    1. I’m usually exactly the same. I only really buy from maybelljne and l’oreal etc, but I just really fancied something a bit more luxury! I haven’t tried the clarins one though.. It’s always annoying when you try something you really like but it’s so expensive! Thanks for reading 🙂 xxx
