Kat Von D Liquid Lipstick – Worth The Hype?

2016 will definitely be remembered as a year of massive upheavals… What with Trump getting elected, Brexit, David Bowie and Prince dying among a whole other host of celebrities – it was certainly an intense year!

In the makeup world though, 2016 was without a doubt the year of the liquid lipstick. Sure they’d been around before, but no one I knew really used them that much and I’d only heard of a few brands’ collections. Suddenly though, it seemed like every blogger under the sun was talking about them, and soon after all of my friends seemed to be using them instead of their previously beloved MAC lipsticks… Now pretty much every brand has a range of liquid formula lipsticks, but none quite so famous as the Kat Von D Everlasting Liquid Lipsticks; arguably the brand that really kick started the trend.

I picked up the most popular shade of the whole range when I was in New York. Loilta; a chestnut rose which supposedly looks slightly different on everyone. For some it’s a dusky pink, others a deep nude, and the rest a rusty brown. I was very intrigued to see how this chameleon shade would look on me!

So let’s start off with my first impressions…

When I first applied this to my lips, I was quite shocked at just how much darker it looked. It was a sort of unattractive murky brown – completely different to what I was expecting! Thankfully, after a few minutes it dried down to a slightly pinker shade, but still a hell of a lot darker and browner than pictures and swatches I’d seen online! I know it’s meant to look different on everyone, but this was like a completely different colour. Since then, I’ve read on the Sephora website that there was a bad batch of Lolitas which came out too dark, so I’m thinking that may be the case with mine.

So with the colour being a little disappointing, I have to admit I was also quite unimpressed with the application. The doe foot applicator is quite small and something about it makes it difficult to use. I find the lipstick doesn’t spread out evenly and ends up looking a bit clumpy.

But how does it last? After all, these are called the ‘Everlasting’ Liquid Lipsticks… Well unfortunately, my initial dislike of this product proves to be correct. After a couple of hours of wear, I find the colour starts to go patchy and I start to get those little flaky bits which is never attractive! It’s also almost impossible to eat or drink without this fading off; something I don’t find with some of my favourite matte lipsticks.

I think this has to be one of my biggest beauty disappointments over the last 6 months. These Kat Von D liquid lipsticks are so hyped up – this colour in particular – and I’m just not a fan at all! They don’t even compare to the quality of the NYX Soft Matte Lip Creams or the NARS Velvet Lip Glides. Maybe as these were the first, all the other brands have now caught up and overtaken them when it comes to formula. What a shame!!

I’d be interested to see if any of you guys have had similar thoughts on these Kat Von D Liquid Lipsticks? And in particular with the shade Lolita? Let me know in the comments below!

Check back in on Wednesday for a new Parisian themed post 🙂

  1. Ah so disappointed to hear you didn’t like them- I haven’t tried the KVD liquid lips although I did plan to as soon as I can visit the counter when I’m back in London. My absolute favourite (& I hate to buy into the hype) is the Kylie Lip Kit in Candy K but I’ve liked almost all the ones I’ve tried- some are definitely better than others though and I’ve found Kylie’s is the only one that stays on through eating/drinking and a full night out!

  2. Omg thank you sooo much. I wanted to buy Lolita but now when I look on Gerard Spray Slay All day I bought it because everyone was raving about it and was dissapointing in some way because it is not special it is just like Mac fix plus but Mac is better and cheapier then I purchased Gerard liquid Hydra Matte lipstick and it was a nightmare you can look on my blog
For it. I was sooooo dissapointed that everyone was raving about it and it was like crap on my lips. I won’t listen anymore Yt on some ultra fancy companies like Gerard or Kat von D because they often get pr packages and they tell good stuff for products that aren’t that good but are very pricy. Thank you for telling the truth

    1. It’s gotten to the point I don’t trust 99% of the youtubers out there because they’re only hyping things because they got it for free or are being paid to hype it. And that’s just not right. If I don’t like a product, even if it was sent to me for free, I’ll say I don’t like it. And I have.

      1. I would always be honest and have given bad reviews on things I’ve been sent before! It’s such a shame because these big youtubers get them for free but other people are potentially spending their very little disposable income on the products they’re recommending xxx

  3. I also heard that Lolita wears differently on everyone but I also heard that Lolita 2 might be better….I havent tried KVD liquid lipsticks yet but after reading your review, I will definitely hold out a while longer. Its too bad though…

  4. Oh no! I saw these on a youtubers favourites and they looked so promising ! I hate anything patchy and dry so I guess its a no go. Thanks for the review! The colour looks quite lovely on you though imo 🙂

  5. I have mini sizes of Lolita & Lolita II and Double Dare. I really have to slather on the lip balm under these when I wear them. In general, liquid lipsticks & I just do not get along. Unless it’s a satin finish, they’re all just to drying and not comfortable unless I wear a ton of lip balm underneath. So I don’t buy them anymore.

  7. I had the exact same opinion of that product and shade! I have worn Revlon Colorstay in Endless Spice for many years, and thought the Kat Von D would be a good alternative.. It wasn’t, I went right back to my $10 colorstay. Maybe give that a shot! I wrote a review of it on my blog last week 🙂

  8. I was so certain I’d love this liquid lipstick and that I needed it in my collection, however your post and thankfully made me rethink before buying it. It’s such a shame when an expensive product isn’t as good as you had wished, especially when there are so many amazing drugstore dupes. Great post 🙂

  9. Great, honest review. I was very tempted by these as Kat Von D has just come to Ireland & I bought & loved her Shade & Light Eyeshadow palette & really wanted to try more. It was between this & the Tattoo eyeliner so maybe I’ll go with the liner instead. Thanks 🙂

  10. Really interesting – I have had a few disappointing experiences with the Matte Liquid Lipsticks but not tried Kat Von D. Have you tried Gerrard Cosmetics, they are brilliant and not over priced. X
