On a visit to Paris, there’s one thing for certain. You’re not going to be short of places to eat croissants and sip coffee…
If you’re looking for somewhere truly special though, I suggest you head over to Saint Germain-des-Pres to a little corner restaurant named Café de Flore.
Now you may have heard of, or at least recognise this place. It’s pretty famous and has featured in a number of movies and TV shows (including Ab Fab!). Set amongst the leafy, wide streets of Saint Germain-des-Pres (the Parisian equivalent of London’s Chelsea), you’ll find this beautiful, ivy-clad café; its terrace filled with fashionably dressed couples chattering away over their cappuccinos and croque monsieurs.
Café de Flore was once a meeting place for Paris’ elite, including philosophers like Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir, and artists such as Picasso. It’s now more of a hotspot for tourists, but it’s still worth a visit just to experience some of that old-world glamour.
Stepping into Café de Flore feels a bit like entering a time warp. It’s still decked out in all its former glory; from the red leather booths, the large mirrors and little wooden tables, right down to the waiters dressed in their traditional penguin suits.
Now I won’t lie, the food isn’t up to much. It’s your classic tourist-trap kind of stuff; club sandwiches, Caesar salads, French frites, etc… All a bit bland and very overpriced. There’s so many amazing restaurants in Saint Germain-des-Pres – I recommend strolling down Rue de l’Ancienne Comedie and the parallel Cour de Commerce Saint-Andre instead for food; a couple of gorgeous cobbled streets lined with amazing bistros.
But if you just fancy somewhere to sit down for a steaming black coffee on a rainy day, or a cool glass of lemonade and a spot of people-watching when the sun’s out, in a truly Parisian environment, this is the place to visit.
Whatever you do though, make sure you order the hot chocolate!
A crisp white mug filled with thick, creamy chocolate goodness… I’m not usually a hot chocolate kind of girl and this had me swooning!
Oh how I miss Saturday afternoons in Paris!
I hope you’ve enjoyed this post and if you are planning a romantic mini-break to Paris this Valentine’s Day and happen to stop by Café de Flore, please let me know.
Check back in tomorrow for a new beauty post 🙂
